About VoiceBuntu (formerly Ubunterisk)

VoiceBuntu is an 'Ubuntu' based live Linux distribution.

It's focus is on running asterisk with no installation needed.

VoiceBuntu has integrated
VoiceOne for configuration convenience.

VoiceBuntu - i.e. Ubuntu itself - has built in boot prompt cheap code one can use called 'persistent'.
This feature allows the user to use VoiceBuntu's 'persistent' feature in order to keep settings on a flash disk or memory stick. For more information about this persistency please see this link.

To start, just burn the ISO file on a CD-ROM then start the live cd distribution and wait until everything is ready.

Please note, that apache will start at the very last moment of the boot cycle. So you may a to wait 1 or 2 minutes to let everything load. Once everything is prepared, start your browser and point to the IP address of your running VoiceBuntu (i.e. http://192.168.0.10).

If you have no DHCP Server available you can press 'F6' at boot screen and add additionally add the command parameter

static=xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx netmask=xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx bcast=xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx gateway=xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx dns1=xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx dns2=xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx

where xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx is the IP of your choice. By that VoiceBuntu boots with static IP address on eth0 network device.

That's all.

Enjoy! :-)
Release notes

2008-01-24:
VoiceBuntu version 1.09 comes with various new features, - some of them as being considered 'mature' and some of them with pilot status, while again increasing overall and longterm stability of the system. Please note that current version still uses VoiceOne version 0.5. Right after this release we will start working on integrating the new VoiceOne version 0.6 plus othe features planed.
In detail the following new features have been implemented in VoiceBuntu 1.09:

hylafax / iaxmodem / avantfax
VoiceBuntu now has implemented 2 IAX faxmodems. To connect them you have to add two IAX extension in voiceone. One with user: 999990 / password: iaxmodem0 and the other with 999991 / iaxmodem1. hylafax then plays the backend faxsoftware for spooling etc while avantfax builds the webbased frontend to send and receive faxes for any user. A new tab has been added within VoiceOne called 'fax' (wat else...:-). Login / Password for both admin and user is 'admin' / 'voicebuntu'.

remote syslog through netconsole
Since version 1.09 you are able to send your syslog output through netconsole to a remote server on the same network. All you have to do is to add syslog=xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx to the command line at boot time (cheat codes) whereas xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx is the address of you server you want syslog to connect to. On the receiving side you have to listen to port 514 (i.e. 'nc -l -p 514 -u' ) then start and after a while you will see the output of the boot process. Please note that during the boot process the output stream while stop once and after some time will start again with no further interrupt. This is because network will restart at boot time meaning that during this short period no syslog can be seen.

new cheat codes
Since version 1.05 various new cheat codes (boot command line strings) have been introduced. The codes are:

New statistics of operation
Since version 1.05 a new extensive statistics module has been added. If you loginto voiceone as an administrator you now can see a new tab called 'statistics' showing all long term stats of the system. In combination with the 'mailto' cheat code (see cheat codes below) of you run out of disk space or if your trunks are down you will get an email warning immediatly.

persistent / economic
persistent will keep all your settings of a session permanent. If you use 'economic' at boot time only the database of voiceone and some other minor things will be kept permanent. As such you are more flexible for any update, need less permanent disk space while still keep all major PBX settings. Test it and you will see that it is a nice feature.

mailpwd
VoiceBuntu now has two possibilities to start either you use the 'old' cheat code parameter 'mypwd=' to specify a particular password to login with or you simply define 'mailpwd' in combination with 'mailto' (see below) to get the emaild initial random root password to you by email. You then can loginto the system and change the password to what ever is conveient to you or keep the random password string for any future login. The random password is changed everytime you boot or reboot.

mailto=you@yourhome
'mailto' is used by various services now (i.e. see also statistics above). It defines where to mail certain events or informations to. This may be handy to keep track of what is going on on your VoiceBuntu box any time.

nolog
Our long term test have shown that with the current VoiceBuntu system a lot of logging information is being produced. This is a potential thread if you want to run VoiceBuntu on small devices with limited amount of memory. Thus we have intrduced 'nolog' cheat code forcing voicebuntu to send all major logging to /dev/null. Please note that if you use 'syslog' in combination with nolog you still have the possibility to 'live' follow any syslog logging message remote.

That's it for the moment. We will start developing VoiceBuntu version 1.1 now. This version will include some additional nice features as well as the new VoiceOne Web interface.

Looking forward to seeing you soon again ;-) Your VoiceOne / VoiceBuntu team!

2007-07-14:
New VoiceBuntu (formerly Ubunterisk) LiveCD release based on Ubuntu 7.04 and VoiceOne 0.5.0_2 due to a minor bug in VocieOne Ver 0.5.0. For further release notes please refer to VoiceBuntu release 1.01.

2007-07-10:
Please download the newest version on VoiceBuntu (formerly Ubunterisk) as shown above. The newest release is based on VoiceOne version 0.5 already.
Please note that a new DB setup for this release is necessary! As such if you used Ubunterisk in persistence mode you have to delete casper-rw content on your memory stick or so. In any case to avoid problems the new release has moved persistence in a subdirectory called "PERSISTENT" keeping each release in the future in a separat subdirectory on casper-rw.

Changes of release 1.01 [2007-07-10] are:

  • New version of VoiceOne [ver. 0.5]. For exact changes of voiceone please see voiceone release notes.
  • Changed persistence mode. Persistence now is being stored in a subdirectory specific on each release in order to avoid problems changed login settings.
  • If started without any boot parameter a random password is being generated for higher security in normal operation. If you need to login you can add 'mypwd=X' to the command line and the login as root with password 'do_enterconfX' whereas 'X' is the password part you entered in the command line.
  • Added feature 'nox' to the command line enabling to start without X11 (nox = no X) inorder to save memory consumption in pure server mode.
2007-07-10:
Since beginning of last week Ubunterisk became officially part of the VoiceOne project and since has been renamed to 'VoiceBuntu'.
In parallel with this step we are able now to host VoiceBuntu on sourceforge.net now with all it's mirror capabilities SF offers.
So please further enjoy VoiceBuntu and extensively use it. Your feedback on this project is warmly welcome!

2007-07-05:
Please note that a new VoiceBuntu image based on VoiceOne 0.4.5 will be available soon. As with this image a new database setup will be neccessary it may be better to wait until next week (week of July 9th). In connection with the bandwith problem to download VoiceBuntu currently described above this may be the best option to choose.
We currently are testing the new image and hope to upload it to our new hosting server at the next week end latest. News including all neccessary new links hereto will follow on this site. 2007-07-05:
After we have been offline for about 5 days including a debate with our current hosting provider [as he had denied access to the ISO image due to the obvious success of VoiceBuntu connceted with some heavy download traffic (which we certainly liked as it shows the interest into VoiceOne and it's live CDROM :-) ] our current provider seems to have accepted further VoiceBuntu downloads at limited bandwith at the moment. So we are back online currently although that we don't know for how long...
As such you may download VoiceBuntu at limited bandwith at this time but be prepared that it may take some time to download the image or to get an error due to a possible new access deny from our provider. Although that we are glad and thank our current hosting provider to be online again we currently look for other oportunities to host VoiceBuntu if possible within VoiceOne Partner network. News hereto will follow soon.

2007-06-09:
A new version has been uploaded. This version contains various bug fixes but als new features.
Bug fixes are i.e. persistence that now should work correctly or various php warning messages that now shouldn't be there any more. In addition a new command line parameter 'nox' has been introduced allowing to operate VoiceBuntu in server mode (no GUI) consuming less memory so.
